After working for more than two years to improve its support for breastfeeding mothers, in November 2016 Hill Country Memorial received the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) designation as a Texas Ten Step facility.
The Ten Steps are a set of evidence-based practices and include having a model breastfeeding policy, education for staff and community, reducing non-medically indicated formula supplementation and connecting mothers with community breastfeeding support after discharge, among others.
“By educating our staff and improving our own practices, we create a healthier community with each new delivery,” said Erin Huff, Director of Obstetrics.
HCM is one of 33 hospitals participating in a statewide quality improvement collaborative project with DSHS and the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality, called the Texas Ten Step Star Achiever Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative. The project includes improving exclusive breastfeeding rates and reducing formula supplementation.
