How do I know when it is time for a hip, knee or shoulder replacement?

The time to consider joint replacement surgery is not when you are debilitated by severe pain, but rather when joint pain interferes with your activities and lifestyle, and you have tried physical therapy and sports therapy interventions with little or no results. Discuss your options with your physician. Together, you will know when the time is right.

How soon after surgery can I return to normal activities, including driving?

This varies greatly by individual, depending on your rate of healing, lifestyle and compliance with physical therapy. Your surgeon will let you know when you can return to driving and other activities. Generally you can expect to drive only after you discontinue prescription pain medications. Some patients return to driving as soon as three to four weeks after surgery.

How long will a joint prosthetic last until it needs to be replaced?

Joint implants are lab tested and predicted to have a lifespan of 25 years or more, thanks to technological advancements in recent years.
