Chronic knee and hip pain are common musculoskeletal complaints, especially as we age. If any of the following conditions slow you down, speak with your health care provider to get moving again.
-
- Osteoarthritis:
A disease in which weakened joint cartilage causes bones to rub together. Pain often increases with activity. Treatment for this common form of arthritis involves over-the-counter or prescribed medications. In severe cases, joint replacement surgery may be necessary. - Rheumatoid Arthritis:
With this condition your body’s own immune system attacks joint tissue, including knee and hip cartilage. Anti-inflammatory medication and prescription drugs are used to delay progression of this condition and lessen the symptoms. - Pseudogout:
In this type of arthritis, your body forms calcium phosphate crystals that collect in the joints (commonly the knee and hip), causing sudden, severe pain. You may experience swelling, red or purple discoloration and severe tenderness. Similar to gout, you may receive prescription drugs, steroid injections or anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling. - Bursitis:
This occurs when there is inflammation of the bursa, a small lubricating sac between a bone and soft tissue. Bursitis is treated with rest, ice and antiinflammatory medications. If swelling is severe, your health care provider may remove excess fluid from the bursa. If infected, antibiotics may be prescribed. - Tendonitis:
Your tendons becomes inflamed or irritated due to overuse. If tendonitis doesn’t improve on its own, your health care provider may prescribe steroid injections, physical therapy or even surgery.
- Osteoarthritis:
