A consistent nationally ranked Top 100 Hospital, Hill Country Memorial is recognized for its quality by both leading medical professionals and patients beyond Fredericksburg.
But its true strength evolves from deep local roots in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County, Texas. When the new hospital opened its doors on Valentine’s Day, 1971, more than 5000 people arrived to tour the new facility. This equaled the entire population of Fredericksburg at the time. The reason for the involvement is that 93% of Gillespie County residents made a financial commitment to the project.
Just as impressive is the personal involvement by community members. Before the hospital was built, 135 Charter members of the Auxiliary helped raise funds. The hospital opened with 77 active volunteers, a legacy that continues to this day.
As a non tax-supported hospital, HCM continues to draw on local support through the HCMH Foundation. Over the years, hospital Galas have raised more than $2.7 million to help fund countless projects, including the Cardiac Rehab Program, Community Fitness Trail, Indoor Community Fitness & Therapy Pool, Women's Pavilion, Cancer Resource Center, ICU Equipment and Furnishings, Digital Mammography Unit, Angiography Equipment, Single Patient Rooms, Computed Tomography Scanner, and other life-saving improvements.
The hospital is now an 86-licensed bed facility, has a state-of-art ICU wing, a new surgical department, programs and facilities, along with other expansions of capacity and services.
Today HCM employs 650 people who share the hospital’s Vision to Empower Others. Create Healthy.
When it comes to health care, Hill Country Memorial (HCM) offers remarkable unparalleled care and a top reputation nationally.
HCM was recognized in 2012 by Truven Health Analytics as one of the nation’s Top 100 Hospitals. The accolade is based on outcomes in 10 categories, from patient safety and satisfaction to adherence to medical and clinical standards. Learn more about HCM’s current awards and recognition.
Even more important are the innovative ways that HCM delivers the highest quality health care to the 10 counties it serves, and beyond.
HCM embraces a consideration of exceptional care that provides services from prevention and wellness, to leading edge diagnostic and acute care, to home and hospice care that addresses the health needs of every generation.
The HCM Wellness Center focuses on healthy living with a complete spectrum of fitness equipment, group fitness classes, indoor heated pool, and warm-water therapy pool. After major medical procedures, patients use these facilities to restore function and work their way back to fitness and function.
HCM is gaining a national reputation for innovative patient and treatment programs such as Restore. The Joint Center is achieving remarkable results through easy-to-understand preoperative classes designed to prepare and inform patients about every detail of the surgery and recovery, through a personalized recovery regimen that gets patients back in action sooner, safer, and sounder. These program distinctions along with excellent clinical outcomes earned the Restore Remarkable Joint Center a Joint Commission Certification Award and recognition as a top 100 destination for Total Joint Replacement in the US.
HCM recognizes that health care is not just a product; it is also a service. That is why our physicians and trained staff members offer regular education programs to help the community understand medical issues and outcomes. Throughout the year HCM hosts Good Health Schools and community health screenings, featuring relevant medical topics such as osteoporosis and bone density testing, hearing and cochlear implant, the importance of colonoscopies, vascular health and more. Additionally health education is offered ongoing through HCM’s nutrition services, personalized fitness programs, and the Transitions program, assisting patients with chronic disease management.
The first step in delivering health care is proper and timely diagnosis. Over the years, HCM has led in bringing the most current technology and training to local patients. Foremost is the modern imaging department offers heart catheterizations, MRIs, CT scans, whole-body imaging, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology, all with the lowest radiation dose in mind.
One example is the HCM Breast Center, a 1,810-square-foot facility that is equipped with an ultrasound room and two leading edge digital mammography units that offer a faster exam and a superior image quality over that of film-based technology.
Another leading area is HCM’s use of multi-disciplinary medical conferencing, which brings together surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists, nurses, and specialized technologists to review test results and coordinate treatment options.
When patients need direct intervention, HCM stands ready to deliver. HCM’s 24–hour Emergency Department handles more than one thousand admissions per month. The hospital treats more than 50,000 outpatient registrations annually. The new five-suite surgery department handles more than 4,000 surgery cases a year.
HCM was founded as a community hospital in 1969. That lasting involvement in and commitment to the community continues. One example is volunteerism provided by the HCM Auxiliary, which was formed before the hospital was established and currently has a membership of 120 men and women.
Hill Country Memorial is so committed to being the leader in health care, it turns to its most important stakeholders for guidance– patients. HCM is also the first hospital in the US to offer a five star Ratings and Review system. This revolutionary initiative invites patients and their families to give “real time” feedback on their experience with the hospital. This patient engagement drives continual improvements across every department in the HCM organization, and is available for viewing by the public at hillcountrymemorial.org.
