Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that concerns the digestive (GI) tract including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

A gastroenterologist is a specialist who is trained in internal medicine and then specifically trained in evaluating, diagnosing and treating digestive diseases. Gastroenterologists treat GI issues with medicines and diagnostic procedures like colonoscopies, endoscopies and liver biopsies. If surgery is needed, a gastroenterologist will work with a surgeon to ensure the most appropriate surgery.
