Score is a free, semi-annual event to screen teenagers for a potentially fatal condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle that makes it difficult for blood to leave the heart. Score is sponsored by Hill Country Memorial in partnership with Austin Heart. While young athletes are monitored via portable echocardiogram machines, parents received information about the life-threatening risk for undiagnosed teens. Community feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive. Score participants have described the event as a simple way to ensure student athletes’ health and reassure parents.
Special thanks goes to cardiovascular disease specialist Dr. Gallagher, technicians, nurses, and directors for making this event possible. “This simple screening can make all the difference in a teenager’s life,” says Dr Gallagher.
