Internal medicine covers the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions in adults. Internal medicine focuses on what’s going on inside the whole body.

An internal medicine specialist, also called an “internist,” has special training to treat people with complex and chronic illnesses from hepatitis to hypertension, and heart disease to diabetes. Internists are skilled in caring for patients who have overlapping or multi-system conditions.
